Definitely a wonderful Christmas gift, to be able to enjoy the astronomy hobby under a clear sky.
It's been a slow month in the dome, with clouds taking over many of the December nights, and work and family commitments filling in the gaps.
Had a great visit to Disneyland earlier this week, and I was thrilled to see a few stars peeking out while I was going on rides! I brought along the sky qaulity meter and measured the sky background brightness at Disney's Main Street USA as a sad 14.97 magnitudes per square arcsecond. Despite the brightness, I was able to see most of the bright stars in Orion. And of course I saw Tinkerbell flying from the Matterhorn, and Space Mountain was full of stars :-)
Anyway after a full Christmas Eve including a family celebration with in-laws and a midnight candlelight service at the church, I'm finally able to spend a few minutes at the eyepiece and contemplate the wonders of the universe. It will be a short run tonight - still need to fill the stockings and get a few hours of sleep before the kids bounce out of bed to open the presents - but hopefully I'll get a few more nights of good observing in the next week, before 2005 comes to a close.
