02/17/2006 Clouds Clouds and More Clouds

Like much of the rest of the country, Tucson has been overtaken by clouds for the past week or so. I guess that is one of the frustrating aspects of our great hobby. I see from some of the other astro bloggers that I am not the only one anxious for some clear skies.
Early yesterday morning I was able to see Venus shining brilliantly in the East, but since I had to drive up to Phoenix for a client meeting I wasn't able to take the time to fully appreciate it. I think that this morning was greatest elongation for Venus, I had hoped to get up and snap a few photos but it was cloudy :-(
Someone asked me whether I have a lot of readers of my blog. To which I responded that I doubt there are any. That got me thinking about why I keep this blog anyway. For me it's really just an easy way to keep a log or "diary", which I have come to realize is an important part of the astronomy hobby. In fact I keep several logs, one handwritten, one in TheSky software, and one in DeepSky software. Each serves its own purpose although I suppose there is a bit of overlap. I'm having a lot of fun using this blog, especially with the simple picture attachments and automatic log posting from within DeepSky. Personally, I'm enjoying reading the other blogs, it's always interesting to see what other folks are doing in astronomy. So if there is someone out there reading this, I hope you find my blog interesting, but my main purpose is selfish so you may not find it too entertaining!
Lots of talk going around about the upcoming Messier Marathon. I plan to attempt it for the first time at the 2006 All Arizona Messier Marathon held between Tucson and Phoenix. If it ever clears I probably should start practicing. I will definitely be using the GoTo feature on my scope, which some feel is cheating, but I'd rather do that instead of not trying it at all.
