02/12/2006 The Sun

Today I attempted to photograph the sun in both white light as well as Hydrogen alpha. We did this to obtain pictures for my son to include in his science project. He's studying the effects of solar activity, and sunspots in particular, on radio wave propagation. HF radio activity is directly correlated to the sunspot cycle; unfortunately we are currently near the minimum in the 11-year cycle, so it is much more difficult to communicate on some of my favorite HF ham radio bands.
Anyway there were really no sunspots to view today and only a very small prominence was visible at the time the pics were taken. It was my first attempt at solar photography with the Meade LPI and either scope (a 5" Celestron C5+ SCT for the white light photo, and a Coronado PST for the H-alpha). The pictures were not focused and the sun was slipping behind a tree so I won't bother posting them here.
By the way I did get some supernova pics last night, stayed out until 4 a.m. Most everything that could go wrong did, but the SN is definitely visible. I'll post them after I have some time process a bit.
