01/21/2007 Winter Wonderland

No observing tonight....
We've been having unusually cold and rainy weather lately, but this is really something! Tucson Arizona is not very familiar with snow storms.
Of course the kids are excited. Too bad they won't be able to have one of those famous "Snow Days" that I used to wish for as a child in upstate NY, long ago. Most likely this little snowfall will melt by morning. Then again, who knows, the world's weather seems to be changing in dramatic ways in recent years so perhaps this is just the beginning of a new Ice Age. But we are still living in a sauna compared to the cold depths of space!
As of 8:00 p.m. local time, the Xanadu Weather Station at KR7RK reports a 31 degree Fahrenheit temperature; maybe it will get colder as the night progresses. Funny thing is, last night I had my telescope gear packed up for some observing at a friend's house. We called it off but I left it packed in the truck for a possible session tonight. Obviously, that was not to be.
So instead, I'll do a bit of image processing, then curl up with my current sci-fi book, Venus by Ben Bova. It's part of an epic series, and although he's not my favorite author I'd say Mr. Bova writes a pretty good story.
