07/15/2006 Another Great HAC Meeting

Last night was the monthly Huachuca Astronomy Club meeting. A few of us were hoping for clear skies to get some observing in, especially with our buddy Alfredo who may be moving away soon, but the clouds rolled in. So instead, Larry, Dean, and I went down to Sierra Vista for the HAC meeting.
It was another excellent meeting, the main speaker was Tom Polakis who is a well-known author and photographer. Tom's talk was about "Tripod Astrophotography" and it was full of great ideas about how to take pictures with just a camera and tripod. It's so easy to get caught up in the feeling that you need a big telescope and fancy ccd cameras and software to take good astro images; Tom gave plenty of proof that this is not true. He certainly inspired me to try to get more pictures with just my camera.
We also heard a brief presentation from Dave Healy, owner of the "Junk Bond Observatory", about using a fish-eye lens on a camera. He had some really neat shots of the insides of several domes with that lens, including a bunch from the inside of the MMT on Mt. Hopkins.
I always enjoy the HAC meetings. I also finally turned in two logs for AL Observing programs that I have had completed for a while - the Lunar Club and the Binocular Messier Club.
