07/01/2006 Camping on the Mountain

I'm typing this blog from inside a tent at Camp Lawton, the Boy Scout campground on Mt. Lemmon near Tucson. I won?? t be able to post this until the weekend, as there is no internet access here.
I?? m staying here for the week with my two older sons and their troop. This is the 3rd night and although it?? s rained each day, this is the first night that there is a thunderstorm outside in the nighttime. A huge crash of thunder just occurred right above us, I sure hope no nearby fires ignite as fires and Mt. Lemmon do not have a very good history.
Of course there is no observing going on, with these summer monsoons that?? s pretty much to be expected. However I am getting in a bit of astronomy exposure. I?? m teaching the Astronomy Merit Badge to a group of 7 boys, we meet each day for an hour. If it had been clear tonight, we would be outside right now doing some observing of constellations and brighter stars. Tomorrow morning, we?? re going on a field trip to the observatories on Mt. Bigelow, which are only about 1 mile away from camp.
I?? m also spending a little time working on some image processing, but not much because I?? m running on battery power only for the laptop. The lack of power and internet is a little hard on me but at the same time it?? s probably a good thing to occasionally be cut off from those things and spend some time living on the basics. I really do enjoy nature a lot, and of course the time with my sons is priceless.
