08/08/2006 That Star Doesn't Belong There!


This one goes way, way back. Taken a little over a year ago, July 6, 2005, about 8 days after discovery. It's not a pretty picture, just a 30-second exposure which was enough to clearly show Supernova 2005cs in M51, The Whirlpool Galaxy. If you were to observe M51 now, this star would no longer be visible.
A great resource for supernova information is The Supernova Home Page. Supernova are very useful as they often provide information used to establish distances.
