08/06/2006 Clear Night Last Night
We had a break in the clouds for most of last night. I set up with the refractor, originally with the hope of imaging through the 66mm. Unfortunately the setup with the 66mm didn't want to behave so I ended up imaging through the 105mm instead. The moon was close to full so it wasn't the best night, but at this time of year you take whatever clearings you can get! Also the seeing was bad so the focus wasn't the best.
The picture above was my first target, IC 5068, an emission nebula near the Pelican in Cygnus. I shot 5 10-min exposures in H-alpha, but when I switched filters I lost the guidestar so wasn't able to get the other narrowbands.
I was keeping in contact with my friends Dean and Alfredo who were each observing at their own homes also. It's kind of fun to have these virtual star parties, we compare notes by phone and e-mail while we're observing.
I also imaged a few other targets including Comet 177P/Barnard, M45, and M31. Will post more on those another time.
