02/18/2006 Observation of Venus

Venus is just past greatest elongation and is presently a nice bright thin crescent. Since it was still low on the horizon, but twilight was rapidly brightening, I observed it under less than ideal conditions. The air is more turbulent lower towards the horizon, plus I'm looking over a few neighboring houses which are throwing off a lot of heat at this time of year (although not too many houses to the East - it would have been far worse to be looking to the West over the city). Also, it was low enough that the dome wall blocked about 1/3 of my aperature. To top things off the clouds were doing their best to cover things up. Nevertheless I had a great view of the planet. I took a bunch of LPI images, will post one later.

I'm sure happy I dragged myself out of bed for this early morning observing session! Probably will pay for it later - I have a busy day at the office and tonight we're taking the cub scouts to a local college observatory.
